Burn piles, winter

Print. Original is 14" x18" acrylic on canvas (private collection).

I don't like to burn piles unless I have to, but sometimes one does, so a few times I’ve burned a pile of "slash" (woody debris from land clearing or logging) in the winter, and watched others do it too, as many rural people have. The fire "burns" holes through the snow, and provides very satisfying night viewing. If you haven’t seen it, it’s hard to conceive of. Beyond the snowburning, this turned into something more. There is no-one in the picture, yet the fire rages, but coldly; another fire burns in the distance. Is it a signalling system to raise the alarm, valley by valley?

This artwork is available as a reproduction in various sizes and by different methods (paper, metal, etc.).
