My art is inspired by deep experience of rural life and wild nature, where I live in Canada on the edge of wilderness. The work is broadly realist, but increasingly feels like a form of magic realism. A frothing creek enters a river by a strange stone circle. A winter bonfire may be a signal. A tree spirals energy upward. A chair burns on a frozen lake.  I’m playing with the phrase “ecstatic realism” to describe these images, as that’s often how making them feels. The ideas in these works come from a lifetime of observing landscapes, forests, weather, wildlife, and battered kettles on campfires.
